50 Years of Formula 1

ELF IN F1

1968...2004...

The new agreement signed by Renault and Elf - some 35 years after the partnership began. 1967- Birth of the Elf group and its operations in F1 marks a whole new era for this remarkable success story.  Since 1968 we have shared a string of victories as Elf launched out in a unique form of sport and human endeavour: Formula 1, but the best is yet to come in terms of technological, commercial and sporting achievements. Presence in racing is vital to the success of a firm in terms of technology.

Our common values - daring, innovation and high-tech excellence - enable us to respond to the most stimulating challenges, the greatest of which lies in the Formula 1 arena, to win back the World Championship.

50 Years of Formula 1 image

Elf is not simply one of the sponsors of the Renault F1 Team. The Group is also a highly important technical partner. Over many years, Elf has developed bespoke products for Renault. Elf has two research and development teams dedicated to Renault. The work of these teams relies on extremely advanced studies and analysis designed to develop technical solutions to get Renault and Elf back on the road to success.

1989: the first victory

The engineers made the most of the time away from F1 to think up and design a normally-aspirated 3-litre V10 engine. At the height of the duel between Senna and Prost - teammates and rivals at McLaren -Williams, drivers Riccardo Patrese and Thierry Boutsen had their work cut out. This was a great victory for the French V10 and one that signalled many more to come.

Nigel Mansell brings hope

The following year, Patrese was rewarded with a win at his home circuit of Imola. Boutsen took his third victory in Budapest, but it was a season of mixed fortunes. Whereas in 1989, Williams-Renault scored 77 points to finish second behind McLaren (with 141 points), in 1990 they had to be content with fourth place and 57 points. The long-awaited progress would only come to fruition a year later with the return of Nigel Mansell.

1992: an unforgettable double

As the 1992 season dawned, anything looked possible! Mansell went on to take five straight victories at the start of the season! He was unbeatable. His state of grace continued over the summer with 3 more precious victories and he crowned the season in fine style at the Portuguese Grand Prix. Never in the history of Formula 1 had a driver won so many races in a single season.

No end to the drama or the racing

Ayrton Senna replaced Mansell in 1994. Williams-Renault-Elf was still performing - it seemed as though nothing could upset the momentum of the Franco-British team. Nothing, except the very worst: the tragedy at Imola on 1st May. Senna went straight on at the Tamburello curve. The shock was terrible. Formula 1 was suddenly mourning one of its greatest talents. Michael Schumacher and Flavio Briatore for Benetton presented Renault and Elf with another double in 1995 before Williams regained supremacy in the next two years through Damon Hill (1996) and Jacques Villeneuve (1997). Eleven World titles in six years signalled that the time had come for the French manufacturer and oil company to take a break. To bring the book of records to a temporary close, before writing a new chapter in the early years of this new millennium.

World Rally Championship

World Rally Championship

The FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) is without a doubt one of the most demanding competitions in the world of motorsports. And also one of the most spectacular! This legendary competition takes in 11 different countries, from Monte-Carlo to Japan. As the official fuel, TotalEnergies is a major player in this competition.

TotalEnergies, official fuel supplier for the WRC

Chosen as the official fuel supplier for the WRC until the end of 2021, we harnessed all our expert capabilities to develop EXCELLIUM RALLY, a high-quality fuel designed to withstand various weather conditions. It is also more environmentally-friendly, because it includes 10% second-generation bioethanol - produced from waste wood or straw, as well as stalks, leaves or non-editable parts from fruit and vegetables.

Each season, we produce 250,000 to 300,000 litres of this fuel, which is packaged in drums then shipped to the rally sites. On-site, a dozen people set up 2 to 3 mobile stations to offer optimum refuelling conditions for competitors throughout the race, whatever the category – WRC, WRC2, WRC3, Junior WRC - in line with the specific features of each event.

Formula E

Formula E

Launched in 2014, the FIA Formula E Championship is now a major global motorsports event. For TotalEnergies, which wants to meet the challenges of sustainable mobility, it is an ideal “test lab”. Starting in 2020-2021, its seventh season, the series switches status and becomes a world championship. To test and develop tomorrow’s solutions, we have set out our commitment to this discipline, alongside our partner DS-TECHEETAH.

Successful partnership between TotalEnergies and DS-TECHEETAH

Totalenergies_ ET_Formule_E

Following our partnership with DS Automobiles, TotalEnergies is involved, since 2018, in the FIA Formula E World Championship with DS-TECHEETAH - made up of DS Performance, the sports division of DS Automobiles, and the Chinese team Techeetah.

Our engineers use all their expertise to create custom fluids for this car class, whose features are different from combustion vehicles. Our products must help delay the formation of a flame in the event of a short circuit. So, we design them with a specific focus on their insulating properties.

The electric engine also offers a higher output than a combustion unit: 95% compared with 45%. The calories produced – and therefore to be evacuated – remain higher and may generate significant levels of heat within the machinal components (engine and gear box). Our lubricants offer an optimized and efficient cooling to guarantee optimum temperature control.

The teamwork and close collaboration that are the hallmarks of our partnership with DS Performance have paid off, with DS TECHEETAH winning the Team title and Jean-Éric Vergne becoming the first person to win back-to-back Formula E Drivers’ titles in the 2018-2019 season. The team successfully defended its title in the 2019-2020, whilst Antonio Felix Da Costa, the other DS TECHEETAH driver, claimed his maiden Drivers’ title.

Formula E at the heart of tomorrow’s mobility

Formula E offers an outstanding test environment for technologies that are being developed. The E-Prix races are very intense and often held in hot countries, providing extreme conditions that must be imitated in our laboratory.

This has enabled us to collect valuable data that has been used to create our QUARTZ EV FLUID lubricant range, which is perfectly aligned with the needs of electrified vehicles, whether they are hybrids, plug-in hybrids or electric.

Driving progress in this segment, these pioneering products illustrate our commitment to meeting the challenges of tomorrow’s mobility, while offering energy solutions in line with the environmental and climate challenges faced.

TotalEnergies has organised itself so that its consumer product range designed for electric vehicles, QUARTZ EV FLUID, can benefit from its latest discoveries in FE within a matter of months. This applies both to electric motor cooling fluid as well as gearbox and differential coolant.

The same engineers work on racing products and TotalEnergies’ consumer range, thus ensuring technical developments can be rolled out quickly. Once the prototype designed for DS TECHEETAH has been approved, it is then a matter of adapting the technology to the requirements of production vehicles. This particularly involves ensuring a longer lifespan for products, with specific tests conducted in conjunction with car and gearbox manufacturers so that the link between racing and production vehicles is effective.

World Endurance Championship

Totalenergies-et-wec

World Endurance Championship

TotalEnergies is the official fuel supplier for the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and for the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

TotalEnergies is therefore actively involved in the return of Peugeot Sport to the WEC from 2022 in the new Hypercar category. The group, via the Elf brand, is equally a partner of Alpine, which returns to the top Endurance category (Hypercar) in 2021.

Major partnership with Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO)

The ACO has recently redefined the rules for the WEC, introducing stricter constraints for the Hypercar category. Now, the objective is to achieve the best performance while minimising fuel consumption. This revolution reflects the current concerns of both manufacturers and motorists: consuming less and reducing their environmental footprint.

To meet these requirements, our engineers have developed a new fuel for 2021, called Excellium Endurance. This specially-designed fuel contains 10% ethanol from renewable sources (plant waste) and is partly composed (5%) of bio-hydrocarbons, i.e. derived from biomass materials that delivers greater energy efficiency. This process marks another significant step taken by TotalEnergies towards its goal of using more and more renewable sources in its fuels.

This high-octane FIA WEC fuel also makes it possible to optimise both compression ratios and ignition settings for engines, improving their output (ratio between mechanical power generated and thermal power spread) and increasing their longevity. Last, Excellium Endurance reduces fuel consumption by 2,5 % to 3 %.

Ultimately, our technology to use Excellium additives, combined with fuel, protects the engine from clogging which is crucial for endurance races and especially the very challenging, 24h of Le Mans. This technology is also used for our consumers in our stations.

Peugeot and TotalEnregies develop a Le Mans Hypercar

Peugeot and TotalEnergies marked twenty-five years of working together in 2020 by officially launching their joint Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) project. An ambitious programme that will lead to a works entry in the World Endurance Championship from 2022 onwards. Deeply rooted in the DNA of both brands, racing has always provided unrivalled opportunities for technological development. Le Mans Hypercar, Endurance racing’s new top-tier category, embodies perfectly the energy transition of both companies and especially that undertaken by TotalEnergies, which has now become a multi-energy group able to meet all mobility demands.

Alpine returns to the top-tier category with elf

Forty-three years after the Alpine A442b claimed overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Alpine returns to Endurance racing’s top-tier category in 2021. It will be supported once again by Elf, its longstanding sporting partner, as it embarks on this new challenge. The arrival of Alpine Elf Matmut Team in the new Hypercar category with the Alpine A480 is the logical next step after claiming two FIA WEC LMP2 World Championship titles in 2016 and 2019 and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times in the last five years in the feeder category to the top tier.

Determined to learn with patience and humility – whilst equally hoping to spring a surprise – the team’s driver line-up will feature the Frenchman Nicolas Lapierre, third overall at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2014, the Brazilian André Négrao, and the Frenchman Matthieu Vaxivière.

The 24 Hours of Le Mans, a legendary race

The main event of the FIA WEC season, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is one of the world’s most extreme and demanding races for the cars taking part.

totalenergies-et-wec-medium

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is equally a huge challenge for the people involved. TotalEnergies teams are no exception to this rule, distributing some 280,000 litres of fuel to the 62 cars taking part. In the interests of sporting equity, at the request of the ACO and the FIA, they also conduct more than 150 fuel compliance tests in the pit garages of the various competitors. They conduct the tests using a chromatography device, which checks the fuel’s “digital fingerprint”. Our fuel is controlled at each manufacturing step in order to ensure high quality and to warrant fairness to all competitors. To do so, a TotalEnergies engineer is on the track to check the fuel, at all time.

More than 150 tests conducted during the 24h of Le Mans to check fuel compliance of the competitors.

5% the fraction of bio-hydrocarbons introduced in 2021 in Excellium Endurance

1.5 years of research and development were needed by the TotalEnergies engineers to develop the formula of Excellium Endurance and approve it with the manufacturers.
