At TotalEnergies, sustainability is not just a goal, it’s a guiding principle that shapes every aspect of our operations. As part of our global ambition to reduce environmental impact and accelerate the energy transition, we are embedding circularity into every stage of our value chain. From biofuels and biogas to circular polymers and waste recovery, our approach is transforming how resources are used, reused, and regenerated.
In 2022, TotalEnergies set a bold target: to valorize over 70% of waste generated at our operated sites. By 2024, we achieved a 71% recovery rate, thanks to our “Reduce · Reuse · Recycle · Recover” strategy. This milestone reflects our commitment to minimizing waste and maximizing resource efficiency across our global operations. Our efforts also include doubling the volume of circular raw materials entering our facilities by 2030, producing 1 million tons of circular polymers annually, and expanding biogas production to 10 TWh primarily from waste.
This global vision of circularity is being brought to life in TotalEnergies Marketing India. In a significant step toward environmental stewardship, TotalEnergies Marketing India Private Limited (TEMIPL) has successfully implemented 30% Post-Consumer Recycled (PCR) content in its plastic packaging across its entire lubricant product range from 175ml bottles to 210L barrels. This initiative, effective from April 2025, marks a major milestone in the company’s commitment to sustainability, innovation, and regulatory compliance.
Aligned with the Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2022, this transition supports India’s national goals for reducing plastic waste and promoting circular economy practices. By integrating PCR content into rigid plastic packaging including bottles, buckets, carboys, and barrels TEMIPL is significantly reducing its reliance on virgin plastic and lowering its carbon footprint.
The implementation was supported by a comprehensive internal framework involving packaging redesign, supplier collaboration, and rigorous quality assurance. More than 65 SKUs underwent extensive in-house testing, including drop tests, leak tests, and transit trials, to ensure that product quality and packaging integrity remain uncompromised.
To help customers easily identify the change, a new PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled) logo has been added to all lubricant packaging. As the new packaging rolls out, customers may notice a refreshed look part of our broader commitment to reducing plastic waste and supporting a more sustainable future.
This initiative not only fulfills regulatory requirements but also reinforces TEMIPL’s leadership in sustainable packaging. It reflects the company’s broader global commitment to circular resource management and its vision for a cleaner, more responsible future.
Globally, TotalEnergies is also advancing circularity through innovative product lines such as Re:clic, which includes:
RE:use – polymers made from mechanically recycled plastic, including high-performance materials for the automotive sector.
RE:build – advanced recycled polymers produced from pyrolysis oil, enabling the recycling of plastics that cannot be mechanically processed.
RE:newable – biopolymers derived from renewable sources like used cooking oils and vegetable oils, processed at biorefineries in France and Thailand.
In addition, TotalEnergies is investing in infrastructure to support circularity, such as a new plastic waste recycling facility in Grandpuits, France, and a battery recycling network in Sweden. These efforts are complemented by the evaluation of 1,300 priority suppliers on sustainability metrics—including waste, water, biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions—by 2025.
By combining global ambition with local execution, TotalEnergies is demonstrating how sustainability can be scaled across geographies and product lines. Whether through advanced recycling technologies in Europe or innovative packaging solutions in India, we are committed to building a circular economy that benefits both people and the planet.
